Or an alternate title - 'Weird Foods I have Eaten'
I didn't have a conventional upbringing. I haven't really talked about what my childhood much yet (aside from saying that I had a good one), but I plan to go into it soon. You can visit me on my very own blog, Sleepless Nights.
Firstly I feel the need to mention that I am Australian and we eat our national coat of arms - the kangaroo and the emu.
I do NOT condone animal cruelty in any way and I feel that no animal should be killed unless it is for food. I can't stand the thought of people shooting something and not eating it.
Like I said I had a unconventional childhood and for alot of it, money was scarce. We always had plenty to eat though, thanks to my father's great hunting skills. So without further ado I have eaten-
Kangaroo/Wallaby - You never would have guessed right? I prefer wallaby over beef any day. It is delicious!
Pidgeon - Oh my, pidgeon....*drools* Baked pidgeon is just so yummy! Stuff with a little onion and some breadcrumbs, push a knob of butter under the breast skin and bake. mmmmmm
Possum - Do NOT eat possum, no matter how hungry you are! It is awful! Roasted or stewed makes no difference. Possum is only fit for dogs and smart dogs won't eat possum unless it is cooked anyway.
Snake - It tastes a little like chicken, however it has tiny little bones that are really fiddly. The snake I ate was cooked on a BBQ.
Eel - Eel is yummy! It looks a little gross when you catch it (this was a fresh water eel), but if you skin it and cut it into little eel steaks it is so nice on a BBQ.
Native Hen - It went into the soup pot, along with a bunch of vegetables from the garden. Native hen should only be souped as they are really quite tough.
Cat - Yes I have eaten cat. *ducks while people throw things* This cat was HUGE and very very feral. My little brother shot it and my mother and I swear that the native animals and birds were bowing down to David as god. This cat had been terrorising the local wildlife for quite a while. Dad roasted it with plum sauce and I must say I was very apprehensive about trying it. It was very very nice though.
Emu - I bought some emu burgers from the butcher once. Yet again, another very nice food. I don't think I could eat great quantities of it though.
Bandicoot - This poor little critter was shot accidentally. Never one to waste anything Dad brought it home and we ate it. Such a pity that they are endangered because they are delicious.
Horse - Horse is such a dark meat, it tastes very very bloody even when you cook it alot.
Hare - Hare is sort of like a rabbit but bigger. They taste different as well, but I still like it.
And finally...
Bunny - Which is where I got the idea for this post! Who me, care if the bunny dies? Nope. If I can I cook it with some bacon I will be a happy happy girl.
