Here, Megan Jordan of Velveteen Mind said things I needed to hear. When she said, "Social media is so competitive and moves so quickly," I knew it wasn't just me as a newcomer feeling this way. When she said she had "just a second-ed" her kids out of an entire day while she tried to keep up online, I knew what she meant, and knew there were times when I could remind myself of my own "she's a whale of a mom" tagline. When she said she wanted to "do a few things and do them well," I thought, "Me, too."

Again it was Megan Jordan's words that found my ears. When she said she asks herself if the reader can find herself in her writing, I thought it was something I could stand do more, myself. "If you want people to read it, it needs to resonate with them," she said.

My panel with Deb, Megan, and Carmen was, if I may say so, amazing. When we conferenced in about the panel before Blissdom, we were all on the same page about not wanting an “achieve balance by getting up earlier and getting more organized!” type of panel. It was real. It was passionate. I unexpectedly dropped the F bomb (um, which I have never, ever done in my life during a speaking engagement). I think we broke new ground with balance panels.

But I do admire the boundary she draws for her family. And Megan from Velveteen Mind took a four month blogging hiatus  and didn’t really worry about what would happen to her blog in the interim. Develop of healthy detachment from your blog.  Don’t let it take over your life.  Blogs make perfect slaves but terrible masters.

I learned SO much. I learned about writing, being professional, having a footprint--all sorts of stuff.

I also got to meet a lot of really well-known bloggers which is just cool. I met MckMama, Redneck Mommy, Megan at Velveteen Mind, and Cecily.

blissdom '10 is not a star trek convention - hollywood housewife

It was scary to approach a stranger, scarier still to approach well-known bloggers that I've been reading for years (Hi, Playgroupie!  Hi, Velveteen Mind!) or been reading for weeks (Hello LoveFeast and Vitafamiliae).  But I forced myself, and the rewards were worth it.

The panels were interesting in their diversity.  In one session, I was told to try all the social media to get my name and blog out there, then in the next session was told one to do a few things and do them well.  I took nuggets from each panel

Hurricane Katrina and Victor Vito - The Laurie Berkner Band

Once in a while, we hear stories about people who have been touched by our music in a way that makes us realize how incredibly lucky we are to be part of this whole journey.

Megan and her family have one of these stories.

We stumbled upon Megan's blog entry detailing her family's amazing perspective and reflections coming out of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, and how the Laurie Berkner Band became a part of the memories and the healing process.  

Megan's blog, Velveteen Mind, features "Victor Vito" as it's top "favorite post". Thank you, Megan, for sharing this beautiful story with us.
